Judges pick faction theme songs in tough but fun competition

They tried rap and folk, Christmas carols and stuff we weren’t quite sure about. But, they came together in song for their team and their charity.

The bottom line: You’ve gotta see them to believe them. A panel of judges, including journalists from the Democrat and Chronicle and insider/metromix , found three winners among the nearly 40 videos submitted. But it wasn’t easy, especially in the case of the Tree faction competition.

Here are the winners, and some thoughts from the judges:

The Tree

dirt5298, michaelrhoda, Klesko86, babyCbearmama

“This was the toughest category,” said Troy Smith, entertainment writer for insider and metromix: I almost went with the claymation video to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller.' But this girl was the most original, going the rap route. When it started, I didn't think she could pull it off because M.I.A.'s 'Paper Planes' is such a great song, but she did. She had me at 'No other faction has swagger like us.' You go girl!"

The Watch

Said judge Jeff Spevak, music critic for the Democrat and Chronicle: “The Dan Brown novel, The Symbol, lying on the floor is a clever detail in this conspiracy of clues, but next time, you're gonna get that guitar tuned, right?”

The Forge

Shilfiell, Kris with a K, dsucy

Judge Emily Shearing, entertainment writer for insider and metromix: “The music and lyrics sound professionally done, and writing a four minute song is going above and beyond. I was extremely impressed by the work this team put into writing this theme song.”

Spevak adds: “Surprisingly slick; too bad so many Lego soldiers had to die for the cause.”

Although the three videos above were our judges’ final picks, they also mentioned these:
agathafan (Tree)

Knapp family (Tree)

Judge Spevak calls describes the “truly funny Knapp family dissing dad's attempts to write a song (‘Too much booty,’ his wife says).”

ems7991 and jtp1317 (Watch)

Says judge Smith: "If you can take one of the greatest songs of all-time, by the greatest band of all time and hang with it... you got my vote. Taking 'Come Together' cleverly changing the lyrics was a great idea. And her voice was actually pretty good."
