I've plotted the points on the extended leaderboard for the last couple of days:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tRXvhZl5oU6dmuez3sYNs7g&oid=9&out...
The graph shows the number of points, from highest to lowest, for ranks 1-200. Data was gathered after 8pm on the indicated date.
The red line 24/9 is before the points for the Coffee Crawl and Recipe challenge were awarded, so the discontinuity the next day (around 85th place) perhaps gives an indication of the number of 'hard-core' players.
Next day, we see an almost uniform increase, corresponding to the automatic granting of points for the Saturday's Newspaper puzzle, with a slight bump for the top ranked, getting Mark of the Brewer early.
For today, we see the rest of the leaders catching up to max points. Interestingly, the size of the day's point gain seems to decrease the further down the leaderboard you go, perhaps suggesting that many missed the second newspaper puzzle today.
Note that since a person's rank does not stay consistent day-to-day, this is not necessarily showing anyone person's increase in points, but rather compares the number of points at any given position on the leaderboard - the X-axis is leaderboard position 1 to 200.

Thanks Poinky!
This is very interesting.
The relatively straight lines on the far left of the graph indicate 20+ player ties for the lead.
I'm leaving town on Wednesday for a business trip, so I should loose my perfect score. :(
