Take a look at the clockwork site; another post today.

Dang. Cut and paste won't work on this one. I think I'll wait for sufficient hints on this one. Don't have the time. Then again, I don't have time for any of this, yet I'm in the top 30. So maybe I will take a look after all.

What's the clockwork site? This must be another one of those things I wasn't engaged in enough at the beginning...

I'm on the path to a solve.
Want a hint? Here's one... :)
I can tell you, this looks like more story and plot, no secret-codes to enter that i see, yet.

Look where you found the first code on the watchmaker page

Watchmaker page?
Is this related to a Chevalier cipher? Sounds like that's a random substitutions cipher...

A couple things. fFirstly, I was wrong. There is a secret keyword. And it's not real obvious. I now have the "Mark of the Suffragist," whose description is "Put the words together."
Rochester does have a rich suffragist history, and this document highlights some of those groups' interactions with the temperance movement. The documents Reference this fFine lady:

If you decode the document, look at the hint given by the Watchmaker and notice the title of the achievement, it's very clear what to do.
Decoding is the difficult part...

Any hints on what direction to take to decode the document? I'm taking a wild guess that that it is one of those codes where you cross out every n'th letter or something like that, but I can't find a pattern yet. Clues?

Doing cryptograms usually doesn't bother me -- but that's when there are obvious spaces between the words. I notice a preponderance of double letters in the code but I'm completely stuck on this too. Any help in figuring out a way to begin will be helpful.

Great hint Scott. Not too oblique and you don't need to be too acute to figure it out. It's just right.

To decipher, you need to think outside the "box".
October 14, 2009 - 10:05am
#14
completely clueless. Where to begin?
October 14, 2009 - 10:44am
#15
I'm almost there on the decoding...the first two came out fine but the third section is not. What am I missing here?
October 14, 2009 - 11:10am

BeautyMama -- this message takes you in a different direction
I was also having difficulty in the last section. Seem to be alot of typos, but if you persist with the translation, you will eventually find the words you need.

I'm still having trouble getting rid of the 'typos'. I'm stuck. :-(

so the typos have no significance? thank goodness I have gotten halfway through and started over thinking i must have made a mistake at least half a dozen times. my eyes can't take this. especially at three in the morning I feel like I'm in school again.

Can someone point us clueless people in the direction of what the key is to decoding?
October 14, 2009 - 11:45am

Nevermind. I just got the think outside the "box" clue. Thanks!
October 14, 2009 - 11:49am

???? I am still totally clueless. Don't even know where to start.

The first set of documents were encrypted with a Caesar shift. This set is encrypted differently.
Think outside the "box". (and google helps, too.)

Don't think code, think direction. 'I pray that' it won't take you too much longer to figure it out.

Got it, thanks for all your help everyone.. Will pay it back in the future.

Ha and now that I got it, those were really good hints! Thanks again.

This deciphering is giving me a serious headache with all the typos. Sorry guys I don't think I'm gonna be able to get points for the Tree on this one. :(
October 14, 2009 - 2:53pm
#27
yes it is nerve wracking ( erased what I wrote just realized that might be more frustrating.) sorry can't help you.:( I was up til 3 starting and restarting to decipher. I was beginning to think the typos were part of the clue but they aren't.
October 14, 2009 - 3:00pm

Try to overlook the typos -- you can get the overall gist of the letter from the words that do pop through. And you will find more than one reference to the words you are looking for and should be able to figure it out.

I have read through all these clues and still cant seem to get anywhere? Any other more obvious hints?
October 14, 2009 - 4:49pm

What helped me alot was to reprint the content of the letters using a different typeface (I used Courier New because all the letters become the same size). Remember, don't think of it as code, think in a new direction. 'I pray that' this hint will help you find your way through the letters.

Ahhhhhhhhhh this is sooooooo bad! Did anyone test this before it went live!? Apparently not. The first two were easy. The last one is taking forever cuz its practically just a random jumble of letters!

I'm having trouble "putting the words together."
mhane? natctiiel? Am I on the right track?
October 14, 2009 - 6:00pm
#33
The first time I went through the third letter I had a lot of trouble too. Turned out there were a few typos, but not nearly as many as I thought there was.
SMP - if you have found the words, just enter them in to the code submission box

"I pray that" is not jumping out at me......

Re-read the clues and look again. It will!

I got the same gibberish words as smp "mhane" and "natctiiel" but was unable to just enter them into the code box in any form. I was told to add a space to three of the rows to shift the letters to get "them" and "the" instead of "mhane" but then I lost what originally came after association so I'm not sure that is correct either. This one is tough.

oh boy, I'm with Tracy. I don't even know where to begin to decode this and the clues are not helping me. I must be stuck in a box and am need of prayer!

Ugh. Finally got it. That was tough.

Oh, geez, I JUST got it. What a poorly encoded puzzle. I guessed at the last word and got it right. If anyone wants offline help, email me at smp8330@hotmail.com

I think there were places in the original message where spaces were accidentally left in and then were stripped out later. As I was going through particularly the third section (but also the first two) I found spots where the letters didn't make a word, but would be fine if they were in the next column, so I'd put in a space and it would help out as I went forward.
So, probably just typos during the creation of the coded message. Though...I do plan on looking at it more closely tonight. ;-) I have trouble letting things go......

Ugh, this thing is taking too long to decode and the typos make it worse 'cause I keep second guessing myself.

Save yourself some time and just focus on the last letter.
October 15, 2009 - 8:57am

I know that when I imported the letter into excel it made deciphering easier, you can push around letters more easily if you know what you are doing

"natctiiel" HELP!! what does this mean???
October 15, 2009 - 9:26am
#45
knottypine, you're close, but the typos are confusing. Look at the first three letters and last three letters of what you've got there, and see if you can guess at what it should be. "Nat------iel" Note: I did not put in the correct # of dashes there, so don't read into that. Hope this helps
October 15, 2009 - 9:27am

Hope that doesn't give too much away. The typos in this one were VERY frustrating...

YEAH you got it!!!!

Phew, thank you bethyalamode...this is the first item that I was almost ready to give up on!
The typos were extremely frustrating. Does anyone know...were they there for a reason, was there something hidden in them? I'm spent!

I don't think there's a time limit to this one. You can come back and try it another time.
