Coming Soon
October 4, 2009 - 9:58am
I see there are few trees that have solved this one already this morning. Any hints?

Are we supposed to translate the notes into letters? I started doing that then realized that would be a very limited number of letters if I was doing it right. Any tips?

No idea where to start on this one... whole bunch of stuff coming soon and hard to say what the notes actually mean...

Hughesbrown,
You're on the right track. There are more types of notes than you may originally see.

Think along the lines of translating notes to letters, but look carefully; some of the "same" notes have subtle differences (quarter vs. eighth notes).

If you want to look online to see what's coming soon to the area, as smp8330 suggests, here's a link to the D&C's recent Performing Arts Preview section.

i really need help. So are the regular quarter notes suposed to be considered what they are? That a c note means the letter is supposed to be a c? and how the heck do you get what the eigth notes are?

I didn't find any of the notes to actually match their musical letter names at all.

I was lost when I first looked at this one, so I skipped ahead to the crossword. When I came back to the puzzle, it only took me about 10-15 minutes to do. Know that each notes represents a different letter and rests are spaces. Know also that an eighth note middle C does not mean the same thing as a quarter note middle C or an eighth note low C. Check out what's "Coming Soon" to Rochester, and compare what you find there to the notes on the page. Once you get the first one, it's easy.
I used this website to help me out, but I'm sure there's many more out there.

October 4, 2009 - 5:20pm
#11

October 4, 2009 - 5:24pm
#12

I have no knowledge of reading music. I found a pattern of like notes but don't know what to do with them. I also got a list of upcoming events but don't know how to make the two come together since I can't read music notes

I was able to come up with the list of upcoming events, but cannot see a key phrase, which needs to be entered as the code. Any hints?

I'm in the same boat, momz4. I have the list but can't see a phrase within them.
Help from fellow trees?
Thanks.:)

You don't need to read music except to be able to distinguish notes from rests and to recognize that some notes have little tails on them and other don't. They represent different letters.
Once you have the list of upcoming events solved, if you had a good hold on the strategies for previous word puzzles then the search will only be slightly prolonged.

So there's another puzzle to figure out within the list of upcoming events? I just wrote down all the events at all the venues. I don't think I'll need all of them. Will I?

Ariel -- you will need one letter from each line to create the key phrase. Keep looking at the puzzle and you should figure out what I mean.
Sonia -- remember that the 'rests' are spaces. When you see patterns (like 3 notes together that show up more than once in the puzzle) try using common words to figure out what letters they are.

what list of events are you looking at "decode" the music? I have looked at both websites listed here and im not finding anything that matches up!

Hmmmm...are "rests" a music term that I should look up somewhere?
October 4, 2009 - 6:32pm

Rests are the squiggly line things... Notes have the black dots (in this case - sometimes they are open circles but not here) so the thing that looks like a 7 and the lightning bolt thing are rests.

Firelilly -- I didn't use either of those sites myself. Instead, google some of the local theatre companies to see what shows are playing this year (i.e. Rochester Broadway Theatre League, and some of the ones you visited on the scavenger hunt). Then as you begin to figure out which notes = which letters, you can try to fit in some of those titles. By the way, not all of the performances are plays. Hope that helps...

HELP FELLOW TREES...time is running out for me (6:33!) and even though I know all about music (1/2 notes, 1/4 notes, rests, holds, etc., etc.)I believe I am just over thinking it. I also don't see any relationship between upcoming events and this music!! Any other hints would be very much appreciated.
thanks in advance.

You are overthinking. Each note represents a letter. The rests are spaces. Look for repeating patterns. Based on the presence or lack of rests, you can see that some lines are single words and others are short phrases.

haven't done the hunt yet, trying to get this done first before the deadline........

so each single note is a letter in the alphabet? Thank you Coriander I thought the rest were the straight lines through all 5 lines. I guess I will assume then there are only two lines with more than one word?

Thanks for your tip, that's just what I needed. For me, it helped to lay out 9 blank spaces and fill them in with what letters were available.

It helped me to have nine lines also. I finished it by treating the music bars like I was playing hangman.

I am going crazy. I have no clue for solving this as I am not aware of any Rochester shows. I tried entering some codes, but this is very difficult for me.

This is how i did it
_ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _
then I took my list and filled in the blanks once you have a few and do the same for the keyword it should jump out at you. You can find them at the d&c link

The D&C link is great. But you can also checkout the individual websites like gevatheatre.org or rbtl.org

Phew, just got back from the scavenger hunt in the dark!
coming soon hint:
more than two words....less than four, with something tiny in the middle.

Thanks for the tip; hopefully I'll solve it and get more points for the Trees. And that's great that you put in the extra effort on the Scavenger Hunt. Us text-less Luddites can't do those scavenger hunts.

Thanks for all help...Trees are the best.

I would look online to see what's coming soon to the area. Also, remember what Zach said in the description -- the rests are spaces.
