Photosynth: Unfair to Mac users
September 13, 2009 - 12:01pm
After taking multiple shots of one of the Rochester horses, I tried to download Photosynth and was told it was for Windows only! This is totally unfair to Mac users. There should be another option for Mac users.

What about people who don't have cell phones? They can't do the scavenger hunt.
What about people without cameras? They can't do the photosynth.
Each puzzle has the possibility to be difficult to complete. You may just need to borrow things (a computer with windows, a cell phone, a camera).
Thems the breaks, I guess. ;)
Thankfully, Lawley has graciously opened the lab on Wednesday.
They should have at least mentioned that you need a computer with Windows on the initial puzzle page, that way people wouldn't be blindsided by the requirement like you were.

Foster Family is correct in that we will be opening our classroom for PTI users to upload their photos on Wednesday. With the amount of technology being utilized in this project, it's not surprising to us that there will be a few issues.
We have had issues such as Photosynth not being usable on Macs, some users not having TXTing capabilities, users without cameras, and we've even had issues of a few users being deaf (unable to listen to the radio, etc.).
Our goal is to allow a broad audience, however sometimes it's very difficult not to hit these barriers and issues, so we apologies if any come up.
Nonetheless, we're here to help! We'll be glad to see you Wednesday, Foster Family (and other users who will show up!). Thanks again for your support and playing!

We ran into the mac limitation ourselves; fortunately our work laptops are PC's, so we got through the challenge. Neat! How long might we expect to have the photosynth results verified?

We'll be verifying photosynth submissions in batches, so you should see your achievement show up sometime today.

To make use of the RIT lab on Wednesday night, should we bring in the whole camera, just the SD card, burn the images to a CDROM, or what? Is there anything I should do to prepare (e.g. make a directory of horse images for each horse if I shoot multiple horses)? Not having access to the app ahead of time I'm not sure what's needed or what would make the process efficient.
For those of you who have done this activity, do you have any suggestions for getting good images for Photosynth? I've already read Microsoft's manual which is pretty good, and I'm looking for practical tips for our specific subject.
Thanks!
Foster Family

I'm not sure if the labs have SD card readers, but worst case I have a USB adapter that will do that. If you bring the entire camera, it will have the SD card inside it, too :)
The lab machines I know do have CD/DVD drives, though.
If you have the images, though, we'll find a way to get them on there!

Okay, I hate to keep whining, but I went to the Photosynth web site to see if I could find other peoples' horses. Apparently I need a "Windows Live ID" from a Windows Live, MSN, or Microsoft Passport account to use the web site. If I don't have a Windows Live ID will I be able to upload my Photosynth image from the RIT lab?

I think you need to sign up (for free), or at least, you need to know someone with a Microsoft Live ID, and do the photosynth from their computer.

Submitted on Sunday, and still haven't received the achievement. We were so excited, because we thought we'd be at the top of the leader board Sunday night, but keep dropping farther and farther down! I've double / triple checked our url and submission; at this point, we're worried! Please, if you can confirm either way, that would be great!

If you have not yet received your Photosynth achievement, and submitted more than eight hours ago, please try resubmitting. If that doesn't work, please post to this thread in the Support forum so that we can centralize the information:

There is. I see that this has been added to the info page for the Picture the Horses game:
"If you don't have a Windows-based computers, bring your collection of photos to RIT's Center for Student Innovation on Wednesday night between 6-8pm, and we'll turn them into a Photosynth while you wait!"
I intend to go! Sounds like fun, and I haven't been out to RIT since I graduated!
