45 minute hunt, my foot. More like 90 minutes buffeted by a cold wind and homeless beggars, like a zombie movie.

I suggest taking a street map with you.

The 1st clue took us forever to find. To save y'all time, it's in the first section you're directed to (before you come to some doors). The intersection you're looking for is not named. The caption gives you one street and the common name of that intersection. You figure out the name of the cross street. Hint for the next clue: That same caption has a special phrase in it.

We got the clue about the futuristic technology correct, but the answer to the clue immediately following this was not mentioned or hinted at in any of the photos along this street - or in photos around the corner or across the street. Hint: the 4-letter answer was featured in an earlier answer involving a catastrophic event in Rochester.

One clue refers to a previous hunt that we had not done. Hint: all of the photos in this section have the same number of panels. Another hint for the clue following this one: you may not see the places in these pictures every day, but there is a sign within one of them that you see in your town or neighborhood; it helps motorists prevent accidents.

That ought to cut 20 to 30 minutes off your time.

Delos,

Sorry you had a less than positive experience. We completed the task on Saturday and would urge all Forge members to try to complete this one as this is the week we hope to overtake the tree (with some delayed points from last week coming in on Tuesday).

For the start of the hunt, I'd recommend looking at the map on the page describing this week's scavenger hunt. The thumbtack on that map will get you right where you need to be.

It took us 2 tries to get the first answer right... but only because we were being too specific. Think generically, rather than specifically.

For "futuristic technology", we simply guessed based on where we were. Looking back on it now though, I see what they were getting at. It's just that it is the only part of the scvngr that asks you to imply something... you won't find "futuristic technology" on any of the photo write-ups, but you will find something that can be considered to be that in the photos. And, the subsequent question really justs asks you to remember something from a few minutes before.

I agree that it was unfortunate that this scvngr hunt made reference to a prior hunt (seems out of keeping with the "you can join at any time" ideal). We didn't do that hunt either, but we happened to know that the prior hunts were: Neighborhood of the Arts, Coffee Crawl, and Downtown over by the D&C.

We were not panhandled, but if we were, it wouldn't have been a big deal...there are these folks in all cities and there are relatively few in Rochester compared to bigger cities. Heck, I've been panhandled on the way to Starbucks in Brighton... My kids have experienced this while traveling to other cities and it is a great discussion starter for talking about who these people are and what is the best way to handle the situation. (In our case, we support charities which provide services to the homeless instead of supporting panhandlers.)

In the end, it was a great activity for my son and I. Plus we ran into 2 other forge teams along the way...

I echo Rochrach's comments...it was nice to have to take a few guesses at some, rather than the deadly multi-picture Coffee Crawl which was just go here, take pic, go there...

Those who did the hunt early Saturday also got to see the Parade! Since I didn't even know there was a parade scheduled this was a happy coincidence.

Aren't those old pictures fabulous? I learned quite a bit!

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the hunt that much, Delos. I thought it was the most fun yet. My two-year-old grandson came along for his fourth hunt (no injuries this time, unlike Coffee Fall) and got his first-ever Cotton Candy at the Parade. We walked the whole route without incident except running into some hostile members of other factions. :)

Ran into a few friendlies, too, which was great!

Oh, this week's hunt was fine, much better than last week's. We learned a lot. And because we couldn't figure out several of the answers, we saw a lot more of the 175th anniversary photos than we technically needed to. This was great; we learned where our church's former building stood.

I posted to try to help save people time if they had limited time for this activity, as we did.

I was also stressed cuz I lost points for Forge by getting so many wrong answers. I wanted to help other people not lose points. I was still crunched for time when I wrote the post, but it seemed important to give people clues as soon as possible. I wrote about the things that went wrong for me, so that others could learn from my mistakes. I hadn't realize I had made the whole hunt sound so negative. It was a great day for a walk and we saw lots of stuff. I liked this hunt.

The panhandlers were numerous on Sunday morning; it was probably the same number as usual, but without the weekday bustle, they stood out more. They came at us from all sides, often all at once - in more than one location. It was almost comical, like a zombie movie. Being hungry and homeless wasn't comical, but the visual effect was. Eerie too. We sent them on their way. No one was harmed.

I recommend doing a downtown hunt at a time other than Sunday morning. ... And going with at least one other person. For us, there was no one around to ask to snap our photo. The closest people were a block away.

I'm new to this kind of scavenger hunt. If we're in a situation where we have to interrupt the hunt, can it be resumed? How?

Delos,

Don't be stressed! The "points" on the scvngr hunt don't matter. If you complete the hunt and submit the photo, you get the same points (250) as everyone else. (The point feature on scvngr which penalizes you for wrong answers and hints is not being used here.)

Also, you can pick up the hunt anytime you want. Simply wait to send the response text message.

Another handy thing to remember -- if scvngr seems to be lost or confused -- simply sent REPEAT to scvngr to get it back on track.

I agree that the hunt was better than the coffee crawl. The problems with the hunt are pretty much poorly worded questions. Be aware of that and you should be okay. Remember wrong answers don't cost you anything even though SVNGR.com says it does. don't worry. My husband and I are not from Rochester and we were able to figure it out. Have fun.

It was my first hunt. We did it early Sunday afternoon. As far as a question relating to a previous hunt, it was more like relating to an earlier theme. We did not get bothered by panhandlers but offered a 'deal' on DVD's. Overall, it was a nice walk around a part of the city that, my wife, sister and I would have never done unless for this game. We did learn some cool facts.

Ohhh, points don't matter. Like that TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? where the points don't matter, they just have fun. I gotta relax about this stuff. I'll be ready for more fun next week. Oh wait. I'm going to have fun this week too, what with the gear puzzles coming out on Friday, where a simple gear's speed isn't proportional to its radius. That's fun in an alternate reality.

Hmm, no panhandlers Saturday morning, but I did come home with religeous pamphlets, a bracelet, and a pen from a judge running for office that was in the parade. Lots of good bands in the parade. Ran into at least 6 other hunting groups.
Came to the realization, I never want to be on Main St again when (a) an ambulance goes screaming by, and (b) when the Towpath fife and drum band's musket patrol shoots off a round, right next to me. My ears we're ringing all the way back to my van.
All in all, a good day.
